As in previous years, we are once again organizing a hut weekend with an overnight stay in 2024! Our third meeting is in the starting blocks – this is your chance to meet other outdoor-loving women and make new friends! We will meet on July 13 in beautiful Valais and hike together to the Turtmannhütte, where we will spend the night. There will be plenty of opportunities to get to know other outdoor-loving women while hiking or enjoying a cozy get-together in the evening!
Arrival and activities on Saturday
We meet between 10.30 and 11 am at the bus stop Gruben VS at the Hotel Schwarzhorn (1820 m.a.s.l.). The exact time will be announced, all information about public transport connections can be found at the bottom of the page.
From Gruben, the route is initially rather flat along the Turtmänna, the river that gives it its name, before the path becomes steeper and brings us to the Turtmannsee. We will take a break there about halfway through the route and enjoy the view. The last 330 m of ascent take us past the glacier outlet of the Turtmann and Brunegg glaciers up to our destination, the Turtmannhütte (2519 m above sea level). The ascent takes about 4 hours with breaks, the route is 8.2 km long and we climb 740 meters in altitude. You can see the exact route below thanks to our partner Komoot.
On site, we check in with the hut wardens Magdalena and Fredy Tscherrig, who will provide us with the best local specialties. After a well-deserved break, there will be a small optional supporting program in the evening that you can take part in. Viktoria and Julia will share their knowledge with you on topics such as first aid in the mountains, what to do in thunderstorms, drinking water in the mountains, route planning with Swisstopo, etc.. They will adapt the content to the questions of the participants.
Activities on Sunday
For Sunday, the area offers various hiking options for you to choose from. Our descent can take place together or individually, we will discuss who wants to do what on Saturday evening. These are the options:
- The normal hiking route takes you via Holustei – Kappellenweg back to the starting point in Gruben. Distance: 9km, 870hm descent, 180hm ascent, duration approx. 2h 45min. This is not the route we took the day before, but a different route at altitude. Link to the route in Komoot
- Alternatively, you can also walk the routes from the previous day: 8.2km, 740hm downhill, 50hm uphill, duration approx. 2h 15min.
- If you like it more intense, you can take a high-altitude trail to the gondola. However, this is a tough one: over a distance of just under 20km, you have to climb 660m and descend 1840m (duration approx. 6h 15min). Alternatively, you can hike through the valley to the gondola, but this is largely the same route as the day before (total: 1200m downhill, 17m uphill, 16.2km, 4h).
Alternatively, there is also a blue and white route that crosses the Schölliloch (13.6km, 890m ascent, 2300m descent, 6h 30min). However, you do this privately at your own risk, it is not organized by us and is only suitable for very experienced mountain hikers and in appropriate conditions.
Here you will find a summary of all the information about accommodation, dates and costs, registration and the general conditions. First of all: We do not earn anything from the event, as we organize it entirely on a voluntary basis. The costs mentioned are the actual accommodation and catering costs of the hut. If you enjoyed the weekend, we would be very happy to receive a tip via TWINT so that we can continue to cover the fixed costs of Swissmountaingirls in the future (website/hosting and co.). We will send you the number after the event 🙂

Info: In summer 2024 (unclear when exactly) the cellar of the hut will be extended with a water tank. It is therefore possible that construction will take place during the day.

Accommodation in a shared room (hut sleeping bag / inner sleeping bag obligatory, we also recommend earplugs).
Getting there on Saturday
The journey to the Turtmannhütte by public transport is by train, gondola and bus. All SBB connections first take us to Turtmann, from where we walk to the small cable car station Turtmann-Oberems (approx. 15 min), which takes us to Oberems. Then we change to the bus to Gruben, where we will start our hike.
Below we have listed connections from different cities and prices with half-fare. All prices are one-way, everyone has to buy their own ticket. Super Saver tickets are available for early booking, which we highly recommend. The gondola must be paid for separately, it costs (one-way) CHF 6.80.
Please note: If you are late and have to take a later connection, you will have to hike longer, as the bus connections to Gruben are very limited! The distance from Oberems to the Turtmannhütte is approx. 16km and 1200 vertical meters.
- From Zurich: Train at 07:02 from Zurich via Visp and Turtmann. Cost: approx. 52 CHF with half-fare travelcard.
- From Basel: Train at 06:56 from Basel SBB via Bern, Visp, Turtmann. Approx. CHF 48 with half-fare travelcard.
- From Bern: Train at 08:07 from Bern via Visp, Turtmann. Approx. CHF 35 with half-fare travelcard.
- From Lucerne: Train at 07:00 from Lucerne via Bern, Visp, Turtmann. Approx. CHF 48 with half-fare travelcard.
- From Lausanne: Train at 07:21 from Lausanne via Leuk, Turtmann. Approx. CHF 25 with half-fare travelcard.
We meet between 10:30 and 11 a.m. at the Gruben bus stop near the Hotel Schwarzhorn. For all those coming by public transport, we will organize group reservations (where possible). It is also possible to come by car – please check here.
Departure on Sunday
On Sunday you return by bus, gondola and train. The bus from Gruben to the gondola leaves at 8:35 am, 10:35 am or 2:35 pm. Alternatively, you can hike to the cable car station (16 km, 1200 m downhill, see route options above).
How you can sign up
To register, please fill out the form below by June 30 at the latest. Please note that your registration is binding. However, you can cancel your registration free of charge until Friday, 05.07.2024 at the latest. After this date, you will be charged the full amount and your details will be forwarded to the hut warden for payment. IMPORTANT: We really ask for fair play, otherwise we will not be able to organize such events in the future.
We will send you further information about the meeting point etc. before the event. The event will also take place in the event of rain. If there is a risk of thunderstorms or severe bad weather, we will cancel the event by 09.07.2024.
